A young man was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to beating up his ex-girlfriend on Sunday afternoon.

David Spiteri, 23, of Luqa, denied seriously injuring Frances Agius, of Rabat, during a heated argument in Iklin.

He also denied breaching bail conditions imposed on him in 2007, in which he was ordered not to speak to her. Lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha did not request bail but asked that he be kept at Mount Carmel Hospital’s forensic unit until the case starts.

The magistrate upheld the request and recommended that he stays at Mount Carmel.

Police Inspector Priscilla Caruana prosecuted.
