A man jailed for two months and fined €3,000 has had the punishment reduced to a €174 fine on appeal after a judge found no evidence to support two of the charges.

Mirko Giannetti, 23, from Żurrieq received a two-month jail term and was fined €3,000 last February for slightly injuring, harassing and threatening his former girlfriend Tiziana Taliana in Paceville in October 2010, as well as breaching the peace.

The woman had testified that he hit her and she fell to the ground, waking up the next day in bed hardly able to move. But she said she forgave him.

The court found no evidence to support the charges of breaching the peace and harassing her.

Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri were defence counsel.
