A boat repairman who thought a trailer had been abandoned and took it, yesterday admitted to stealing and damaging it.

Dan Petrila, 38, a Romanian resident in Marsascala, took the trailer from outside a house in Żabbar on April 14. Defence counsel Roberto Montalto said he had not damaged the trailer but altered it at a cost of about €230.

Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo said that the accused had fully cooperated, had apologised and also offered to pay for any damage caused.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli conditionally discharged him for two years and ordered Mr Petrila to return the trailer and cover any damages.
