A thief who allegedly tried to steal a police inspector’s car and then threatened him at a police station was charged in court yesterday.

Simon Chircop, 46, of Attard, pleaded not guilty to the attempted theft of a car belonging to Police Inspector Pierre Micallef Grimaud at St Julian’s on Wednesday at around 5pm.

Mr Chircop was allegedly spotted trying to break into the car by another police officer who immediately arrested him, police inspector Trevor Micallef said. When he was being interrogated at the St Julian’s police station, he also allegedly threatened Mr Micallef Grimaud.

Before Magistrate Neville Camilleri, Mr Chircop also pleaded not guilty to damaging Mr Micallef Grimaud’s car, threatening him and being in possession of a knife without a police licence. Magistrate Camilleri refused to grant him bail.
