Thank God and his parents, Nils Muiznieks is alive, able to travel and live his life. The gift of life that was not aborted.

He is concerned that we Maltese have not opened a debate on abortion. The Maltese people discuss every topic under the sun, even abortion. However, we prefer spending time celebrating when a new life is announced: a baby is born.

The “misconception” mentioned is only the one he is trying to filter through our minds.

He insists “abortion is a human right”. This is inverted values.

We prosecute anyone for cruelty to animals. How can he ever think we would consider legalising cruelty on an unborn child? In Switzerland, lobsters are protected from dying a painful death and he insinuates we consider letting a growing child being sucked up from the mother’s womb and shredded. Does that give a woman any rights?

Rights are what is morally correct, just or honourable. Is it morally correct to commit murder? Is it just to combat the defenceless? What is so honourable about cutting off the lifeline of an innocent being?

We know that unplanned babies happen but abortion is not the way out. We have organisations to help those in a pregnancy crisis, offering a holistic approach, unlimited help and full support to facilitate carrying the baby to term and also suggesting options for adoption, fostering or, better still, assume responsibility and form a family unit.

Maltese professional medics are dedicated to saving lives, including those of premature children and give their utmost to reduce threatened miscarriages.

I invite Muiznieks to return and take a walk by our schools, nurseries, colleges and fun parks and look at the children. Would he stomach the idea that they could have been aborted? We Maltese love our children and cherish life, from conception till resurrection. We do not need to reform abortion law, even if we would be the only ones in Europe standing by our values. This is no competition we want to be part of.
