The Malta cycling squad recently took part in the first Bihor Tour, held in Romania.

Etienne Bonello, Maurice Formosa, James Mifsud, Christian Formosa, William Hili, Mark Bonnici and Alexander Pettett made the trip to Oredea. The contingent was headed by Joe Bajada, the secretary of the Malta Cycling Federation.

A total of 23 teams, including some professional outfits, participated in this training camp. They hailed mainly from Romania, Greece, Moldova and Serbia.

Bonello relied on all his experience to register times similar to those in the leading group, which kept him in contention for the entire distance.

However, luck did not favour the Maltese team as, on day two of the Tour, Mifsud suffered damage to his bicycle, and the same misfortune befell Formosa on day three.

Despite these setbacks, the Bihor Tour was a useful experience for the national team ahead of the European Small Nations races in San Marino.

In a statement, the Maltese federation thanked the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta for their assistance

Meanwhile, the hard work and dedication shown by the Maltese cyclists didn’t go unnoticed and was appreciated by the Bihor Tour organisers, the federation said.

The team has been invited to participate in the second edition of the Tour in June next year.
