A Maltese man was beaten up by seven motorbike taxi riders on Sunday night in a popular Thai beach resort, according to pattayadailynews.com.

The news website reported that the incident happened when Michael Cassar, 48, damaged an ATM in Pattaya after it swallowed his bank card.

Motorbike taxi riders in the area reportedly shouted abuse at him but he carried on attacking the machine.

Armed with bottles, steel pipes, chairs and pieces of wood, the seven drivers then beat Mr Cassar “severely”, according to Pattaya Daily News.

The beating took place at the entrance to Soi 4, one of Pattaya’s main roads lined with many bars and hotels.

Mr Cassar was said to have been left bloodied and bruised, with a swollen face. He reported the attack to the police.

His wife, Mai Suwannahong, 26, told police she was with her husband when the assault happened, the website stated.

After questioning, the police allowed Mr Cassar to go to hospital.

Pattaya Daily News wrote that the police will inspect CCTV in the area to identify the taxi riders and issue them with court summons.

Mr Cassar did not respond to a request for comment via Facebook yesterday.

It is unclear if he lives in the resort or was just visiting.
