During the very frequent commercial breaks on at least three of our local TV stations, we are heartily advised (in Maltese) to choose the product advertised with the word Għażel. Had the advertisement been in English it would be translated as ‘choose’, in the imperative tense.

And in this tense, in Maltese, the correct word is Agħżel. Yet nobody seems to care about this grammatical error and Għażel (third person masculine, past tense) is still being used evening after evening, instead of Agħżel.

The Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ilsien Malti is apparently unaware of this and other Maltese grammatical errors in our media. But as long as skond (according to) is being written skont (discount), riżq, risq and amen, ammen, the council is happy, and can rest on its laurels, fully convinced that the Maltese language is being truly safeguarded.
