A racing motorcycle prototype partly developed in Malta by a Maltese company was unveiled in Kordin yesterday.

The prototype, which carries the Bimota name, one of Italy’s most prestigious motorcycling brands, will now be taken to a specialised racing track in Imola, Italy, where it will undergo further fine tuning.

The project, by Action Frame Ltd, involved the design of an innovative motorcycle suspension system, which uses a carbon composite arm for both front and back suspensions.

Action Frame was awarded €120,759 through the European Regional Development Fund Research and Development Grant Scheme. The grant, which is managed by Malta Enterprise, covered 45 per cent of the project cost.

The ERDF scheme awards cash grants to companies to carry out industrial research and experimental development projects. It is co-financed through the ERDF allocation for Malta for the period 2007-2013.

During a visit to Action Frame, Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi said that the project was evidence of the government’s commitment to investing in small businesses. He congratulated Action Frame for their innovative project, which was a good example of successful Maltese entrepreneurship.

The project, Dr Azzopardi said, showed the government was focused on innovation and creativity. The second edition of the Malta Innovation Awards, launched on Monday, was a further example, he added.
