An exhibition of Maltese and Serbian art is currently running at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s.
The collective features around 70 works consisting of paintings, ceramics and photography from artists Jelena Jakovljevic, Doranne Alden Caruana, Sabrina Debono, Joan Zammit Cutajar and Joseph Agius.
Visitors can admire works in oil, acrylics, graphics and watercolour. Jakovljevic is allotted a section for her photographic creations, Alden Caruana shows forceful and colourful works in watercolour, while Debono and Zammit Cutajar present expressionistic works with a marine theme. Agius, well known for his ceramic plaques and his vision as a committed social realist in defence of ethnic groups deprived of their rights, is also exhibiting his works.
The best works presented as a set of four are primarily graphic and saturated in a sanguine red that gives them a sense of tragic drama.
Founded in February 2010, the Maltese-Serbian Community is an NGO with the aim of promoting the cultural values of these two nations through joint projects with its Maltese partners.
The aim of the exhibition this year is to promote diversity, tolerance and European values. Though the artists represented may have different concepts and vision, the NGO hopes that the event will bring around more harmony and unity.
■ The exhibition runs until March 15 at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s.
