A team from the Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) recently participated in the 10th Mediterranean Championships in La Coruna Spain.

In this competition, the Maltese selection was up against lifters from Bosnia Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Italy, Israel, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

Turkey topped this year’s edition ahead of Spain and France.

Malta put on a commendable showing after finishing in fifth place.

First on the mat for the Maltese team was Andy Grech.

The young lifter produced an eye-catching performance on his international debut when recording a personal best total of 185kg and scoring 235 points.

Next up were newcomers Elisia Scicluna and Kristen Borg.

Despite this being their first overseas experience, they both performed well with Scicluna scoring 157 points while Borg amassed 156.

In the final competition, Malta was represented by Matthew Camilleri and Rodmar Pulis.

Coming through a stuttering start, Camilleri managed to deliver a good showing, scoring a total of 229kg and earning 275 points.

Last on the platform for Malta was Pulis who is currently preparing for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The impressive Pulis set a new national record in Clean & Jerk, obtaining 309 points overall.

“These results bode well for the Maltese lifters’ aspirations of qualifying for next year’s Mediterranean Games, to be held in Tarragon, Spain,” the MWA said in a statement.

The Maltese contingent, led by coach Jesmond Caruana, was assisted by the Maltese Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
