Pawlu Pavia, one of the original creators of the Żejtun mechanical crib explains why one of the biggest Christmas attractions in the village is in dire need of restoration works.

Some 65 years ago, a mechanical crib was inaugurated at the convent of the Sisters of Jesus Nazarene, Żejtun. The crib was built after Bishop Emmanuel Galea decided to create a religious symbol to rekindle the villagers’ faith and hope of a better life after the devastation of World War II.

With the help of several villagers, he succeeded in finishing the project in 1947. The crib was constructed with whatever was available at the time, such as newspaper and glue, wooden doors and several pieces of wood.

The mechanised part was fabricated with a motor attached to a multitude of nylon strings, which were made to function by means of bicycle pulleys and chains and small cinema film wheels.

Joseph Pavia, who currently takes care of the crib, said the structure itself is in danger of collapsing. These words were echoed by his grandfather, 88-year-old Pawlu Pavia, the original builder of the crib.

Both say the crib needs urgent care and restoration. Although some restoration was carried out on the crib’s roof, its scenery and also on some of the figurines, there was other work that needed to be done urgently.

“The crib’s faults and weak points are not immediately evident to the naked eye, and visitors rarely notice just how dire the situation is. However, in reality, the whole structure is in danger of collapsing,” Pawlu Pavia said.

Woodlouse and the high level of humidity are the two major factors.

The crib is situated in the convent of the Sisters of Jesus Nazarene, Bishop Emmanuel Galea Street, Żejtun, and is open until January 4 between 9.30am and noon and from 4 to 7pm.
