Malta’s run in the 2012 European Championships came to an end last night after losing to hosts Ireland 8-6 in the semi-finals.

The best-of-15 match turned out to be a thrilling affair with the two teams locked at 6-all.

With only three frames to decide the winner, the Irish won the opening two frames of the final session to seal victory.

Earlier yesterday, the Maltese had secured their place in the last four after edging Wales 8-7 to finish second in their group.

In the singles competition, Clint Azzopardi raced into the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-1 victory over England’s Neil Toms. However, the Maltese player was then ousted by England’s Jack Pope 6-1.

Pope had reached the last eight after defeating Mario Brincat 6-1.
