A Maltese finalist has made it to the individuals category of the European Waste Reduction Awards.

Joanne Scicluna, coordinator of Createhope, will be travelling to Rome in May for the award ceremony.

The awards are linked to the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), an annual initiative celebrated in November that brings together thousands of events from across Europe, all aimed at reducing the amount of waste we produce.

In 2013, there were 66 events registered for the local edition. Of these, the most innovative and exemplary initiatives were recognised at the Malta Waste Reduction Awards, following which the six local winners were also nominated by WasteServ to contend for the European awards scheme.

Ms Scicluna won €500 for her upcycled jewellery, home decor and Christmas decorations among other items, all of which are created using donated items or reused materials. Her voluntary activity, tagged Createhope, raises funds for Fondazzjoni Suret il-Bniedem, and her prize money was donated to this charity.

Other winners of the Malta Waste Reduction Awards were Home Economists in Action, Malta Freeport Terminals Ltd, Sliema Local Council, Soċjetà Mużikali Madonna tal-Ġilju and St Ignatius College Girls Secondary School.
