The Maltese side at the 2012 European Team Championship, composed of Alex Borg, Duncan Bezzina and Simon Zammit, are through to the quarter-finals after beating Ireland 7-3 at the first knockout round of the tournament in Sofia, yesterday.

Malta had booked their place in the last 16 as runners-up from Group D behind Israel who topped the standings with five wins from as many matches.

Borg, Zammit and Bezzina, classified at no.6 in the last 16 rankings, had four wins and their only upset came on Day Two when they lost to Israel 3-0 (9-2 on frames).

Yesterday, Borg beat John Sutton 3-0, Bezzina beat Rodney Goggins 3-1 and Zammit and Greg Casey drew their match 2-2.

In the quarter-finals Malta will now face Switzerland as England play rivals Scotland, Israel were paired with France and Poland take on Belgium.

Yesterday, Switzerland eliminated the second Israeli team in the tournament in a tight match 7-5.

England (Michael Wild, Robbie Williams and Steve Judd) ousted Cyprus 7-4 while Scotland were streets ahead of Poland’s second team who conceded an 8-1 defeat.
