Alex Borg and Duncan Bezzina produced a remarkable comeback as they recovered from two frames down to see off Ireland’s Jason Devaney and Rodney Goggins and reach the semi-finals of the European Teams Championship in Bucharest yesterday.
After battling their way to the last eight of the competition, Borg and Bezzina struggled early on against the Irish duo who took a two-frame lead.
But the Maltese kept their composure to win the next four frames and secure a 4-2 victory.
This morning, Malta play Poland 2 who whitewashed Poland 1 4-0 in the last eight. The final is scheduled for this evening.
Earlier in the day, Borg and Bezzina recorded back-to-back wins to book their place in the quarter-finals.
First, they found little difficulty in easing past Romania’s Cosmin Constantin and Tiberiu Teodoru 4-0 in the first knock-out round to set up a last-16 clash against Welshmen Lee Walker and Rhydian Richards.
The Maltese pair surged into a three-frame advantage but Walker and Richards refused to go down without a fight and they set up a tense finale after winning the next three matches to send the encounter into a decider.
Borg had to rely on all his experience to see off Walker 84-23 and seal a 4-3 victory.
