Under the title Maltese Church, Vienna is an internet site detailing aspects of a most centrally located church of the Knights of Malta, on Kaerntnerstrasse, between St Stephen’s cathedral and the Vienna opera house.

This church was altered in the 18th century under the auspices of the Italian Knight Bailliff Colloredo, as stated on the facade’s tablet.

It could interest the many readers of The Times because it shows how far flung the Order of the Knights of Malta was on the European continent, with commanderies, lands, castles.

In addition to the Maltese church in central Vienna, there is the Maltese church near Maltese Square in Old Prague, Bohemia, Czech Republic.

The German Langue of the Order of St John of Malta included commanderies, lands and castles in Catholic Germany, notably the Rhineland and Bavaria, in the Austrian empire, especially Austria, Bohemia, Silesia, Poland, Lithuania, then the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.

A wealthy and flourishing langue indeed, worth remembering.

My wife and I visited the Vienna Maltese church last week and saw the Prague Maltese church 10 years ago.
