Typical Maltese architecture and streetscapes feature prominently in a jazz music video released this week.

Getting Some Fun Out of Life is the title of Canadian jazz vocalist Rebecca Binnendyk’s song from her album Some Fun Out of Life, which was released earlier this year.

Based in Waterloo, Ontario, Binnendyk performs regularly in various settings in her country, from duos to an 18-piece band called the Canadian Big Band. She studied classical voice and sang in choirs and various musical theatre productions before she started singing jazz in 2006. Two years ago, she started working on her first album with producer John “Beetle” Bailey.

Binnendyk decided to film her first video in Malta due to its “unique flavour”, as she explained in a previous interview in the Times of Malta. She got in touch with local actress Sarah Lee Zammit, who directed the video, while Paul Jones took on videography duties. Filming took place at the end of May.

The video’s plot is basically a reverse story of Cinderella, in which a girl meets a guy at a ball and he leaves her notes around the city until they find each other. Renald Bezzina plays Binnendyk’s love interest.

Locations chosen included the Fine Arts Museum, The Splendid in Strait Street and the Malta Society of Arts. The video also features various street scenes, one of which was filmed at Dock No. 6 (China Dock) in Cospicua.

Getting Some Fun Out of Life is actually a cover version of the hit by American jazz musician and singer-songwriter Billie Holiday. The album features other cover versions, such as Corinne Bailey Rae’s Put Your Record On and Jon Bon Jovi’s You Give Love a Bad Name, but also includes original numbers, a couple of which were written by Binnendyk herself.

The artist, who is about to move to The Netherlands, has plans to perform in Malta later on in the year.
