Malta U-17 came from behind to beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at Dragon Park, Newport yesterday.

It was a commendable showing from Sergio Soldano’s team who were looking to make up for their disappointing display against their Welsh counterparts on Tuesday, when the hosts had cruised to a 4-0 win in another friendly.

Wales took control of proceedings and Connor Evans put them ahead after 31 minutes.

However, Malta’s response came on the change of ends as quickfire goals from Matthew Guillaimier (54) and Aidan Friggieri (57) put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

The home side took just two minutes to restore parity as substitute George Thomas made it 2-2.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, the Maltese grabbed the winner on 83 minutes.

Friggieri again took centre stage when he scored his second of the day to give his team a 3-2 win.
