Sometimes I wonder whether Labour is suffering from political amnesia. First, it was Joseph Muscat who tried, shamelessly, to put at par his party’s intimate relationship with the Gaddafi regime with the government-to-government relationship under successive Nationalist administrations. And in a typical “fools rush in where angels fear to tread” manner, Labour shadow minister Helena Dalli followed suit through a mind- boggling article, The Gaddafi Memory Hole (September 5).

What was Dr Dalli thinking? Does the lady really and truly believe that people are suffering from political amnesia? Does she believe that she can re-write history? Amazing, how Labour thinks it can take people for a ride.

No Dr Dalli, no amount of spin will eradicate the memory of the Gaddafi visits to Malta under successive Labour governments and his numerous addresses at MLP mass meetings, the military clauses in the agreement, the imposition of Arabic in our schools. Does she not remember that the Labour Party used its friendship with the Libyan dictator to scare the electorate away from voting for the PN lest this close relationship was put in danger? Labour’s ties with the Libyan regime can’t be erased because it is ingrained in people’s minds.

Shamelessly, Dr Dalli tried to drag the late Nationalist MP Mario Felice to support her illogical and wobbly defence of Labour’s blood brother relationship with the Gaddafi regime – but then you can’t expect better from a Labour Party which will do anything as long as it believes it furthers their thirst for power, which continually eludes them. The Labour shadow minister fails to explain the shocking details revealed in a CIA document which shows that, at least in one instance, the Gaddafi regime financed an MLP mass activity, “Give Peace a Chance”. Instead, she castigates MEP Simon Busuttil who, and rightly so, demanded clear answers form the Labour Party.

Labour’s dark past has caught up with it – finding itself in a corner it tries to wriggle out and in so doing makes a fool of itself.
