Malta’s dismal showing in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign will be discussed at a meeting of the Malta FA Executive Committee tomorrow.

The members of the MFA Exco will convene for the first time since the national team concluded their Euro 2012 commitments with a 2-0 home defeat to Israel earlier this month.

The positions of national coach John Buttigieg and his assistant Carmel Busuttil are expected to come under scrutiny as Malta gained only one point from 10 qualifiers.

Malta FA president Norman Darmanin Demajo’s scathing criticism of Buttigieg’s selection policy has cast serious doubts about the latter’s future as national coach.

In comments he gave to The Sunday Times yesterday, Darmanin Demajo not only expressed his disappointment at Malta’s poor performances in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, he also bemoaned Buttigieg’s decision not to call upon all of the country’s foreign-based players, saying this approach was not in sync with the Malta FA’s vision.

“I believe that full-time professional players who play in leagues that are better and faster are mentally stronger and more suited to national team duty, but in the past few games we have witnessed the dwindling presence of our ‘foreign’ professionals in the starting line-up,” Darmanin Demajo told The Sunday Times.

The work of the MFA technical centre is also believed to be on the agenda of tomorrow’s meeting amid reports of a radical shake-up in the coming months.

Although Darmanin Demajo would not be drawn into saying whether the positions of Buttigieg and Busuttil were in jeopardy, he invited them to do a self-analysis in the context of Malta’s results in the last two years.

Buttigieg took over the national team from Dusan Fitzel in 2009 on a long five-year contract.
