The EU must do its utmost to ensure Libya does not become “a battleground for regional players”, according to National Security Minister Manuel Mallia.

Speaking at an informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Milan, he expressed Malta’s “deep concern” at the regional implications arising from the security and political turmoil in Libya.

Dr Mallia said EU mediation efforts to bring about a ceasefire should intensify.

“A pro-active approach to tackle the instability in Libya is required since no country in the EU is immune to the potential spill over effects,” he said.

He said Malta supported all efforts directed at the democratic process in Libya and urged respect for its elected institutions.

The Libyan Parliament elected two months ago is toothless and unable to enforce decisions. It was pushed out of Tripoli and has been meeting in the eastern town of Tobruk.

Last month, Islamist militias that overran the Libyan capital recalled the previous Parliament and set up a separate government that is unrecognised by the international community.

The ministerial meeting also discussed the security implications of the crises in Ukraine and Syria.
