Is it more viable to renovate derelict buildings or to build anew?

It all depends on the age and the state of the derelict building, the structure’s stability and the suitability of the building’s use, location and accommodation for its intended future use. Moreover, one would need to assess the cost of carrying out all the renovation and changes. Glen Schembri, 24, Mcast Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Construction Engineering.

It depends on how bad a state the derelict building is. If the infrastructure is unstable, then major alterations are a must. Jessica Pavia, 18, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery.

It is not always practical to renovate a derelict building, as some are in too bad a state to be reused. Sometimes it is better to build anew. Michael Micallef, 18, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery.

Would it be better to expand horizontally or vertically?

Locally, it is much more feasible to expand buildings vertically, rather than horizontally, resulting in less area footprint. However, high-rise buildings may result in a higher construction cost. Glen Schembri

Considering the size of the islands, I would say vertically is always the best option. Jessica Pavia

Personally, I think vertically makes more sense especially in Malta. The lack of rural space is an evergrowing issue and construction expansion is a big issue. Michael Micallef

Should the spread of construction into the countryside be stopped?

Considering the fact that rural areas in Malta are minimal, construction projects are the major threat to the environment.

On the other hand, major renovations to existing buildings in the countryside should be more tolerable, bearing in mind that there should be no collateral damages to the surroundings. Glen Schembri

Definitely. If expansion is vertical, then the countryside would be spared. Jessica Pavia

Yes. Control on certain ‘improvements’ is wise for future generations. Michael Micallef
