A maid who admitted stealing two gold necklaces from the house she was cleaning was yesterday given a suspended sentence, with the magistrate warning her she was being given a second chance.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea warned Brenda Orsini, 49, from Senglea, that her crime could have put her in jail for seven years.

The court heard that Ms Orsini stole the necklaces on Saturday morning while she was cleaning a house in Triq il-Pedalwett in Swieqi. She sold the necklaces to a jeweller’s in Valletta but gave the money she had received back to her victims.

Magistrate Galea jailed Ms Orsini for 18 months suspended for three years, warning her not to commit another crime during that period. She was also given a three-year supervision order. Police Inspectors Fabian Fleri and Carol Fabri prosecuted.
