The Malta Union of Teachers welcomed Budget measures for teachers such as a sabbatical, five new schools, apprenticeship schemes and the increase in University funding.

On the introduction of computer tablets, the MUT said further discussions were needed to avoid burdening educators who had to keep up with a multitude of reforms.

The union hailed the decision to open free childcare centres but felt there had to be substantial investment and proper working conditions to attract professional staff.

The MUT also welcomed plans to increase autonomy for schools but warned against increasing bureaucracy especially for heads of schools.

On a negative note the MUT said it had expected the Budget to tackle perennial problems such as informal education within the family and the community as well as school transport problems.
