Parliamentarians paid “a pittance” to secure privileged all-year round parking in Valletta, the Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises has charged.
Reacting to a clarification by Labour Whip Carmelo Abela that reserved parking in Valletta for MPs did not come free but at a yearly cost of €46.50, the GRTU said that this charge could in no way be compared to other parking costs.
MPs who paid the charge were exempt from CVA charges and have a parking space reserved in the environs of the Palace.
The GRTU said that the money paid by MPs for a reserved parking space in the capital city 24 hours a day could hardly be deemed to be a payment.
It said those who parked next to Auberge de Castille every day and gave parkers €2 in tips would pay around €600 yearly and those who enter Valletta and park for a whole day pay more than €1,600 a year.
The GRTU called on MPs to give up this privilege.
