The Nutcracker’s first performance was not a success, but the enduring popularity of the musical suite Tchaikovsky extracted from it helped make it a Christmas season staple.

Under the direction of Armenian conductor Sergey Smbatyan, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing an extensive selection of music from this heart-warming ballet.

The orchestra will also be performing Mendelssohn’s Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his only Violin Concerto, for which it will be joined by the highly-acclaimed young Korean-American violinist Esther Yoo on the 1704 ‘Prince Obolensky’ Stradivarius violin, which has been generously lent to her by a private collector.

The concert is being held today at St George’s Square, Valletta, at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased through http://ticketline.com.mt .
