The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is closing this year’s indoor concert season with a grand MPO Soloists Gala Concert on Saturday, which will also serve as the culmination of the orchestra’s new vision, and a celebration of all milestones achieved throughout the year.

Under the direction of Brian Schembri, the orchestra will perform Gioachino Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra Overture. and Maurice Ravel’s Boléro (Finale). Eleven of the MPO’s musicians will perform as concerto soloists, accompanied by the 80-strong orchestra in three other interesting pieces.

These are Edward Gregson’s Trombone Concerto, Gian Carlo Menotti’s Triplo Concerto à Tre, and Nino Rota’s Divertimento Concertante for Double Bass.

“This is the first time that we will be having 11 soloists performing on stage, which is a huge deal where the execution of symphonic concerts and concertos in Malta is concerned,” says MPO marketing manager Maria Blanco.

The MPO Soloists Gala Concert, comprising a one-and-a-half-hour programme (excluding interval), is taking place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on Saturday at 7.30pm.
