The youngest MP on the Opposition bench, Ryan Callus, got down on his knee to propose to Maria Stivala at the end of a three-week trip to Ruiru, Kenya.
Mr Callus formed part of a group of 25 young people who went to Kenya on missionary work organised by the NGO Karibu Malta.
Although it had been on his mind for months, the right moment came yesterday during a play depicting a wedding.
Mr Callus knelt down and in front of street children and orphans participating in the event asked Ms Stivala in Swahili whether she would marry him.
He had to repeat the question in English and when she said yes, Jumbo the pet baby goat trotted in with the ring around its neck.
