The Malta Council for Science and Technology has launched Fusion: The R&I Programme. The programme aims to support local technologists develop and commercialise new technologies.

Over the past years Malta has moved up in the EU Innovation Scoreboard rankings and Fusion is focused on pushing Malta further up in the rankings.

Fusion offers monetary support vouchers to be utilised for IP check, market research, product development costing, economic impact analysis and risk profile assessment. These studies are undertaken to help the technologist ensure the commercial success of the technology.

Fusion has two programmes. The first is a voucher programme covering the intellectual property and the commercialisation viability.

The second programme is the actual technology development, which is further supported through funds ranging from €50,000 and €200,000. The programme is open to micro enterprises and SMEs as well as researchers from academic institutions.

Target areas include health, high value-added manufacturing, aviation and aerospace, resource-efficient buildings, ICT as an enabling technology, innovative tourism product development, innovative maritime services and aquaculture.
