The Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has launched a new award with a view to promote ICT innovation in civil society. This will recognise a voluntary organisation that has pioneered innovative web-based technology to better serve the community.

The MCA said non-governmental organisations (NGOs) play a significant role in today’s society as they operate closely within the community and address specific social needs. By leveraging on ICTs, NGOs can become more effective in fulfilling their mission and reaching out to their respective target communities.

The MCA is organising this award to primarily showcase best practices of how local NGOs can be at the forefront of innovation, but, more importantly, to highlight the net benefit gained by the community as a result of integration of technology by such organisations. It is hoped that such cases will also serve to inspire other NGOs to follow suit.

Voluntary organisations interested in submitting a nomination for this award are encouraged to download the nomination form accessible at www.networked.mca.org.mt/networked-society/ngo-award.

Applications are open until September 19. The winner will be announced in December. The Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations is supporting the initiative.

Meanwhile, the MCA has announced that the deadline for submission of nominations to participate in the third edition of the MCA eBusiness awards has been extended to September 15. The categories this year are Best eGovernment Initiative, Best eCommerce Site (B2C), Best B2B Application, Best APP, Best eBusiness Idea of the Year and Best Multi-Channel Strategy.

Private enterprises, public entities as well as any other organisations that embrace ICT as part of their operations, or have developed a solution that has proved successful in local businesses, are all encouraged to submit their application.

Interested parties can log on to www.mca.org.mt/ebusinessawards2013/ and submit their nominations online. Submissions after this deadline will not be accepted.
