Mġarr United couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the new season as for the first time they won a match in the women’s BOV Division One after beating Gozo FC 3-1 earlier this week.

This is Mġarr’s second appearance in the top flight in women’s football after being relegated two years ago but winning promotion at the first time of asking last season without a defeat.

Brenda Borg, the new signing from Lija/Iklin, scored twice on her debut for Mġarr.

Her first goal came after just six minutes and she sealed her team’s victory nine minutes from time.

Gozo’s Tracy Theuma had cancelled Borg’s opener but just before half-time Antoinette Sammut beat keeper Mary-Ann Mumford to put Ray Vella’s team back in front.
