Nationalist Party MEP candidate Helga Ellul yesterday outlined a proposal to set up a freeport to store luxury goods free of any taxes or customs duties.

High-value items could range from artworks to precious stones and documents.

Such a concept has already been tested in Luxembourg.

“Malta has all the qualities to enable the successful operation of such a facility, namely its strategic location, a strong financial services sector and excellent air transport connections,” she said.

It would require an initial investment of some €20 million and would create 100 immediate long-term jobs.

She knew of an interested foreign investor who would be happy to meet the Prime Minister and Economy Minister on the matter.
