Luxol St Andrew’s chalked up their second honour of the 2015-16 futsal season earlier this week after beating Ħamrun Spartans 7-3 in the Gatorade KO final.

The Spartans, having lost the National League play-off series to Valletta the previous week, gave their all, particularly in the opening half.

But Luxol, who started the season back in November by winning the Super Cup, looked sharper on the evening to prevail 7-3.

As happened in the league decider last month, the cup final was played behind closed doors for security reasons.

Luxol established a double advantage, following goals by Florin Anton and Mark Zammit, but the Spartans drew level just before half-time with goals from Madson Caetano and George Frendo.

During the half-time break, Luxol must have opted for the right tactics as they surged forward in search of a goal right from the restart, going 3-2 ahead thanks to another Anton strike.

The Spartans, however, again hit back and Frendo scored his second of the evening to level matters at three-all.

But, Luxol’s attacking stance never relented in this match and soon they were back in front when Carl Azzopardi scored a quick double before team mentor William Barbosa and Celino Alves made sure with two other strikes that tilted the balance in the Saints’ favour.

The Spartans opted for the flying keeper but the Luxol rearguard controlled their opponents’ frantic efforts to preserve their lead.

At the end of the match, Luxol captain Barbosa was presented with the KO trophy by Mark Borg, the Futsal Malta Association president.

Another trophy was presented to Raphael Felipe Ortiz de Oliveira, of Ħamrun.

Ortiz de Oliveira was top scorer in the Gatorade Futsal League.
