Luxol claimed their first major honour of the new futsal season after beating Valletta 7-4 in a hard-fought Super Cup contest at the Corradino Pavilion, on Friday evening.

Valletta, the league champions, had to bow to KO holders Luxol as the two teams clashed in front of a sizeable crowd, auguring an auspicious start to the 2016-17 campaign.

The first half saw a dominant Luxol side establishing a 5-1 advantage before the break.

They hit the target three times in 15 minutes, through Celino Alves, Frane Despotovic and Zvezdan Vukovic.

Raphinha pulled one back for the Citizens but the St Andrews outfit didn’t lose their concentration and were on the mark two more times in quick succession, through Carl Azzopardi and Emil Raducu, for a cushion four-goal advantage.

Valletta had their chances but were denied by Saints goalkeeper Matthew Xerxen who also kept out two penalties.

The second half opened with a Xavier Saliba goal for Valletta whose coach, Clayton Felice, opted for Dylan Musu as their flying keeper.

However, Despotovic’s Luxol did not wilt under the pressure and Alves was again on the right spot to make it 6-2.

The Citizens hit back with Mohammed Elamari and Musu goals but Mark Zammit sealed Luxol’s victory late on.

Luxol captain Zammit was presented with the Super Cup trophy from Mark Borg, the Futsal Malta Association president.
