A coach was metres away from plunging three storeys down into a vacant plot yesterday after a crash in a well-known accident black spot.

The vehicle was being driven towards the harbour to collect cruise passengers at 8.30 a.m. when it crashed in Mikiel Anton Vassalli Road, metres before the Kappara roundabout, police said.

The coach hit a Toyota Aygo driven by a 37-year-old lady from St Julian’s, which escaped with minor damages.

No one was injured in the accident, which happened on a wet surface, shortly after early morning drizzle.

Supreme Coaches said there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident, and when police arrived on the spot there was only the driver, contrary toinitial reports he had tourists on board.

According to police at the scene, had the 52-year-old driver from Pembroke been driving any faster, the momentum would have sent the vehicle crashing through the railings.

The impact, however, damaged the concrete railings and an electricity pole, and the road remained closed for hours until the coach was towed away and the Civil Protection Department took care of the oil spillage.

The crash caused traffic congestion since the coach blocked the entire width of the road.

Power in certain areas of Gżira was interrupted as Enemalta technicians disconnected the damaged pole from the grid. It was restored shortly after.

The accident happened on the same road that a truck last Janaury almost plunged five storeys.
