A young Norwegian gambler became so obsessed with a Maltese woman working for an iGaming company that he flew to Malta to meet her even though she had ignored his messages.

Steffen Sorvik, 25, was yesterday handed a suspended jail term and fined for harassment.

He met Stacy Giordmaina while playing on an online gaming site and the two exchanged e-mails and phone numbers.

The friendship turned sour when the accused became fixated and obsessed with Ms Giordmaina, Police Inspector Roderick Agius told Magistrate Charmaine Galea.

Mr Sorvik continuously harassed her by sending her e-mails and text messages that she ignored, yet he still flew to Malta to find her.

He found the office where she was working and went there to meet her, which was when the police were called in.

Mr Sorvik admitted to harassing and insulting Ms Giordmaina. Magistrate Charmaine Galea sentenced him to one month in prison, suspended for two years, and a €500 fine.

She warned him that if he tried to contact the victim again he would be sent to prison.

Their relationship, if there was one to begin with, had ended, the magistrate told him. Ms Giordmaina was placed under a two-year protection order. Inspector Roderick Agius prosecuted.
