If there’s one group of people rushed off their feet as much as Santa’s little helpers right now it’s postal workers.

Yesterday was the busiest day of the year for staff at Royal Mail’s Glasgow sorting office.

Many dressed up in festive outfits as they tackled the deluge of Christmas cards and parcels – 2.8 million items in one day.

Employees have been working 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the run-up to Christmas, with Royal Mail taking on 1,900 temporary staff to cope.

An extra 574 vehicles have also been drafted in to deliver Christmas cards and presents.

Gerry McAuley, delivery director for the west of Scotland, said: “We love parcels and our customers clearly enjoy sending them.

“We will be working right up to Christmas Eve. No one else works harder at this time of year in every single village, town and city across the country.”
