Maltese residents spent €370 million, or an average of €129 per night, on trips abroad last year, as the number of outbound tourists rose by 10 per cent over the previous year.

National Statistics Office figures put the number of outbound trips at 363,463 for 2013.

An estimated 87.5 per cent were to EU destinations, an increase of 11.3 per cent.

More than half were for holiday purposes and the number of same-day visitors amounted to 40,566.

In December alone there were 39,854 trips, a rise of 13 per cent over the prev-ious December.
