Last Touch Gallery in Mosta is currently hosting a collective exhibition titled The Spirit of Raku featuring the works of 15 Maltese artists.

Having originated in Japan, raku is a technique traditionally used for tea ceremonies. However, through the years, artists have modified the technique with the aim of creating a one-off and unique glazed piece.

The exhibition features a selection of works by: Alfred Aquilina, Analise Seychell, Andrea Pullicino, Angelo Aguis, Anna Miggiani, Barbara Attard Pettett, Deborah Marmarà, Dolores Lungaro-Mifsud, George Muscat, Marthese Psaila, Nadya Anne Mangion, Omar Falzon, Philip Cilia, Phyllis Camilleri u Steve Mattocks.

Besides the technique of raku what is also common between these artists is that they all attend the evening raku courses held at the Mcast Art and Design under the guidance of George Muscat. All the work has been created and fired while at the aforementioned course.

During the exhibition opening, the Malta Raku Association (MRA) was launched. The need for such an association, where artists and also the public can experience the raku technique, was much felt.

This association has been set up with the aim of creating awareness, promoting, teaching, the sharing of ideas and organising all things related to the art of raku.

Those interested can get more information about the association from its Facebook page and also by calling 9947 1547.

• The Spirit of Raku runs at Last Touch Gallery till December 26.
