In her contribution The Plight Of Sliema Residents (March 1), Sandra Camilleri states how very sad she was to see a recent Net News report regarding Bisazza Street, Sliema. The cause of her sadness was because no resident was interviewed. She wondered why and hence her main complaint, adding “after all their votes are more important than the business community”.

It is somewhat ironic of Ms Camilleri to say so, since she was the one to ignore the votes she obtained from Nationalist voters for her election to the now defunct Sliema council.

She also opines that some elderly residents do not think it was a good idea to have the street pedestrianised 24 hours a day as “some people go to the theatre, need medical help – no one can get to their residence due to it being closed to traffic”. She feels it would have made a difference if the area were open for residents only from 9 p.m. to midnight. What she has not stated is that the street is barely 100 metres from one end to the other! So what’s the fuss all about?

But the cherry on the cake is that she tells us that Sliema is in a mess, with no law enforcement, no wardens, no authority around and crime having gone up in the area. Now that is a clear case of self-indictment, for she has been sitting on the Sliema council for the past four years. What has been her contribution, besides being a renegade to her own (Nationalist) party and defending ex-mayor Nikki Dimech?
