Almost 50 children were attending a summer programme for those struggling to gain basic literacy skills, Education Minister Dolores Cristina said.

Ms Cristina was speaking during a visit to the Ħamrun centre where the programme, Nwar, is offered to schoolchildren.

The programme, which is aimed at preventing social exclusion, provides personalised lessons to 48 students twice a week.

She pointed out that, in the last scholastic year, 233 students attended the programme between October and February and 273 between March and June.
