Higher licence fees for older vans, trucks, tractors and vehicles for hire will be applicable from today.

Transport Malta said the new fees were the result of a Budget measure announced by the previous government in 2009 that would be become effective in 2014.

The age of vehicles will now be taken into account when calculating the annual circulation licence fee, as well as weight and suspension type.

Most increases will impact vans and trucks over nine years old that were registered and licensed before January 1, 2010 and weigh over 12,500kg, Transport Malta said.

Fees for M1 vehicles (carriers with up to nine seats) for hire with an engine cubic capacity of more than 2,000cc will increase by €91.60.
