A Gozitan chicken and rabbit breeder is complaining that his business is at a standstill because major but delayed road works have made his farm inaccessible.

Works going at such a slow and lazy rate- breeder

Frank Micallef, of Victoria, filed a judicial protest against Transport Malta and private contractor Asfasltar saying the roadworks in Mġarr Road, Victoria, were “going at such a slow and lazy rate” that they were at a standstill with not a single employee on site for days.

He noted that Transport Malta had said the works, which had started in June, should have been completed in August.

Mr Micallef said his business, which has been up and running for 35 years, consisted in the sale of rabbits and chickens from his premises in Mġarr Road. The road in front of his farm was closed and dug up, making it completely inaccessible, he pointed out.

A small opening was left to give people access to the farm but this could only happen through the site where the work was being done, making it highly inconvenient and even dangerous, he added.

The lack of planning behind the works was apparent because, instead of splitting the road into sections, the entire stretch was dug up, leaving parts undone, he added. Mr Micallef said his business was suffering badly because customers gave up going to his farm due to the difficulty and danger in reaching it.

This situation was unacceptable and Mr Micallef requested that the stretch of road in front of his business would be completed as quickly as possible, adding he would hold the transport watchdog and the contractor responsible for any loss of profits or damage incurred.

Lawyer Kevin Mompalao signed the protest.
