Verdala International School, Pembroke, recently successfully hosted a week-long Comenius project entitled Seeing and Making Visible, which brought students and teachers together from Hungary, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Poland and Malta to celebrate learning and cooperation through artistic activities and using English as a means of communication.

The students worked in groups to create artworks which were later put on permanent display at the school. These included a puzzle collage of Ottavio Leoni’s chalk portrait of Caravaggio using black ink, pastels and newspaper cuttings from each participating country; creative presentations by each group of Caravaggio’s life and paintings and of a visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral; the layering of digital photos taken in each participating country, with photos taken in Valletta, and the transfer of these layers onto wood; and paper cup and soft-board drawings using colours, geometrical shapes and lines to connect, unite and express the week’s experiences.

Teachers and students were also invited to attend and participate in lessons with their hosts.

The meeting was led by Mouna Keune, Nancy Generelli and Samantha Hothersall and funded by the EU through its Lifelong Learning programme.
