The Deaf People Association is organising a short course for current and aspiring teachers of Maltese sign language.
At present, Maltese sign language courses are provided by just two Maltese sign language teachers.
However, over the past two years, demand to learn Maltese sign language has increased dramatically. The Deaf People Association also regularly receives requests from businesses, schools and individuals, which prompted the executive committee to work a number of entities to organise this much-needed training.
The course, which will take place between today and Friday, will equip deaf people and those hard of hearing with skills in Maltese sign language teaching and with the necessary skills to participate in the training of interpreters.
The course is also an opportunity to promote teamwork within the deaf community and to increase the self-esteem and confidence of the participants. It is also hoped that the project will strengthen links with foreign academic institutions and foster interest in the linguistics of Maltese sign language and help develop the existing curriculum.
