As the date of the dissolution of Parliament draws near and with the parties’ electoral campaigns set to launch on January 7, I would like to make one final appeal to party leaders Lawrence Gonzi and Joseph Muscat to leave a lasting legacy to our nation.

They must not make their legacy the Piano project, the lowering of our water and electricity bills, the reduction of income tax or other fiscal incentives.

If they really wish to leave a truly noble and lasting legacy, then they must both include an irrevocable promise in their electoral manifestos. They should promise that, if elected, they would immediately introduce legislation to provide assisted residential accommodation for mentally disabled persons when their parents are no longer around to provide the shelter and love that their loved ones need and deserve.

Nothing short of this promise will help ease the anxiety and suffering of the thousands of parents of mentally disabled citizens of Malta. Are these persons considered citizens of a lesser God?

Whither Malta?

Where are our nation’s values and its sense of priorities?

Go for it. It can be done.
