Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa has been awarded the 2011 Ambassador’s Award for Environmental Excellence by the United States Embassy. This prestigious award recognises firms that epitomise environmental excellence by adopting best practices protecting our environment and promoting sustainability.

Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa forms part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, a global hospitality company that continuously stresses the importance of being a leader in terms of environmental sustainability in all of its hotels worldwide. This company has committed to a 30 per cent reduction in energy usage and a 20 per cent reduction in water usage by 2020. Specific deliverables are required from each hotel and this international company expects nothing less than 100 per cent commitment from its properties in adopting key sustainability initiatives.

Through the leadership of Joseph Zammit, security and health and safety manager at Le Méridien St Julians, the hotel already actively contributes in energy conservation, controlling its carbon footprint by reducing the CO2 emissions. Le Méridien St Julians also boasts a waste management programme and encourages customers and employees alike to participate in environmental activities organised by the hotel. Increasing the percentage of local products in all purchasing aspects is also a key part of the program.

The announcement and presentation of the award took place on the UN-sponsored World Environment Day on June 6 at the US Embassy in Valletta. Chargé d’Affaires Richard Mills hosted the ceremony and emphasised the importance of corporate leaders promoting environmentally friendly technologies and adopting best practices.

Le Méridien St Julians has quite a few projects in the pipeline. One of them is the introduction of infrared repellator films. The project is intended to help minimise the amount of direct sun heat that is generated through the window panes in the hotel lobby, therefore saving on a lot of energy induced by the air condition system.

Last week, Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa was also awarded with a Gold Award for Sustainable Tourism by Travelife International Tourism Services Limited.
