Recently I listened to a parliamentary debate on irregular immigration and the saga that followed in which a group of migrants almost ended up being sent back to Libya.
I frequently tune in to follow radio parliamentary transmissions and I would like to congratulate both sides of the House in deciding to continue such transmissions.
Good arguments were raised from both sides of the House, including those by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition; however the best speech was given by Lawrence Gonzi.
During the debate on irregular immigration, Dr Gonzi’s valid arguments, his oratory, his knowledge and his style in communicating the message –emerged in an exceptional way.
It is a pity Gonzi is calling it a day as an MP and leaving the political scene. The leader of the Nationalist Party should do his utmost to convince him otherwise. The nation still needs his expertise. At least he should consider contesting next year’s European parliamentary elections.
Gonzi, who led Malta after our EU membership, should continue to offer the country his experience, knowhow and knowledge of European affairs.
