Less than 2,000 West Brom fans stayed behind for the lap of appreciation in the last Premier League match at home last season – a defeat to Stoke.

That was Pepe Mel’s final chance to say thank you and goodbye. It was blindingly obvious that he was off.

In his time at the Hawthorns, Mel steered the team to just three wins in 17 games but, vitally, he secured Premier League status for another term.

West Ham guaranteed their Premier League survival with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in a London derby at White Hart that took the pressure off Hammers manager Sam Allardyce.

The Hammers’ fans were more than glad to stay the pace as Upton Park, their home for 110 years, was sold to developers paving the way for their move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016.

A few days before Christmas, West Bromwich sacked Steve Clark and Mel was appointed in mid-January.

The Midlanders finished in 17th place just above the relegated trio. Their poor home form of seven wins was the worst in the Premiership along with that of bottom club Fulham.

Seconds after Nicolas Anelka’s first goal for the Baggies at West Ham, he performed the quenelle gesture which transformed his season. The Frenchman was vilified and later banned.

There were moments in the last phase of the season when Allar-dyce was walking on a tight rope but he succeeded in keeping the Hammers in the top flight.

Mark Noble, who chased everything that moved to keep West Ham alive, was named Player of the Year at Upton Park. The 26-year-old was an ever-present for the Hammers last season.

In the FA Cup, West Brom fell at the first hurdle after their upset to Crystal Palace 0-2.

In the League Cup it was another home exit for the Baggies, this time to Arsenal. The exit came in the third round after a penalty shoot-out.

West Ham were hammered at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest sent five goals past them in round three of the FA Cup.

After the wins over Cardiff and Tottenham, the Hammers were crushed 9-0 on aggregate by Manchester City in the semi-finals of the League Cup − away 0-6, home 0-3.
